Description

A hearty and flavorful slow cooker cabbage with bacon recipe combining tender cabbage, crispy bacon, and a tangy mustard sauce for an easy and comforting side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 6 oz bacon
  • 1/2 cup diced yellow onion
  • 1 head cabbage
  • 2 teaspoons jarred minced garlic

Seasonings and Liquids

  • 2 tablespoons stone ground mustard
  • 1/4 cup chicken bone broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon and onions: Begin by preheating a large skillet and adding chopped bacon and diced onion. Cook until bacon is crispy and onions are lightly browned, allowing the flavors to develop.
  2. Prepare cabbage: Slice off the cabbage stem and cut the cabbage in half. Remove the core and cut cabbage halves into large pieces approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches each.
  3. Assemble in slow cooker: Place the cabbage pieces into the slow cooker and top them with the cooked bacon and onions, including the extra bacon grease for flavor.
  4. Mix and pour sauce: Whisk together the stone ground mustard, chicken bone broth, smoked paprika, and jarred minced garlic. Pour this mixture evenly over the cabbage and bacon in the slow cooker.
  5. Cook cabbage: Cover and cook on high heat for 3 hours until the cabbage is tender and infused with the bacon and mustard flavors.
  6. Season and serve: Season with salt and pepper to taste before serving. Stir gently to combine all ingredients well and enjoy.

Notes

  • Store leftovers for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator.
  • Avoid freezing leftovers as it can alter the texture of the cabbage.
  • Reheat leftovers on a low-power setting in the microwave to keep them moist.
  • Add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for an extra spicy kick if desired.
