Description

Crispy and flavorful puff pastry cheese straws seasoned with paprika, Italian herbs, and parmesan cheese. Perfect as a savory snack or appetizer, these cheese straws are easy to make and bake to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 puff pastry sheet, defrosted if frozen

Seasoning

  • 3/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Topping

  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oven: Set the rack in the middle position and heat the oven to 375ºF (190ºC). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Defrost the Puff Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry overnight in the refrigerator or on the counter until cool but pliable, about 40 minutes if thawing on a sheet tray.
  3. Make the Seasoning Mix: Combine paprika, dried Italian seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper in a small bowl and set aside.
  4. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: Place the defrosted puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Lightly dust with flour if sticky, then roll into a 12 x 10-inch rectangle, about 1/8-inch thick.
  5. Add Egg Wash: Whisk the egg and water together in a small bowl, then brush the surface of the pastry with the egg wash evenly.
  6. Add Seasoning and Cheese: Sprinkle the prepared seasoning mix and grated parmesan cheese evenly over the egg-washed pastry.
  7. Press in the Toppings: Gently roll a rolling pin over the pastry to press the toppings into the dough without tearing it.
  8. Cut into Strips: Using a chef’s knife or pizza cutter, slice the pastry into 10-inch long strips about 3/4-inch wide, making 12 strips total.
  9. Twist the Strips: Twist each strip tightly and place them on the prepared baking sheets spaced at least 1 inch apart, six per sheet. Brush each strip with egg wash again.
  10. Bake: Bake the strips in the preheated oven until golden brown, puffed, and crisp, about 16 minutes. Repeat with remaining strips. Serve warm or cool completely on a wire rack.

Notes

  • Store the cheese straws in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For longer storage, freeze cheese straws in a large resealable bag or container for up to 1 month.
  • To reheat, warm the cheese straws on a baking sheet at 350ºF (177ºC) for 5 to 7 minutes until crisp.
  • If puff pastry feels sticky during rolling, lightly dust with flour to prevent sticking.
  • Make sure to cool cheese straws completely if storing to maintain crisp texture.
